Sasha Slaughter here && this week on the Dead End it's all about serial killers!! I'm not too familiar with them, but as usual, Zombie Zane knows a bit more than I do about it...*anyone else noticing a pattern here??* So I'll be doing an article about Albert Fish. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
Hamilton Howard "Albert" Fish (May 19, 1870- January 16, 1936) was born in Washington, D.C. He was an American serial killer and was often referred to as the Gray Man, the Werewolf of Wysteria, the Brooklyn Vampire, and the Boogeyman. He was a child rapist (mainly little boys) and a cannibal. He claimed to "have had children in every state" possibly referring to rapes and cannibalization. He was suspected to have committed at least five murders in his lifetime, and confessed to police three murders and then confessed to stabbing two others. He was put on trial for the kidnapping and murder of Grace Budd and was convicted and executed by the electric chair.
He spent much of his childhood in an orphanage after his father ( who was 43 years older than Fish's mother) died of a heart attack in 1875. His mother was mentally ill and was not capable of caring for Fish. Mental illness ran rampant in his family. His uncle suffered from religious mania, a brother was confined to a state mental hospital, another brother died of hydrocephalus *an accumulation of fluid in the cranium* and his sister had a "mental affliction". Three of of closest relatvies also suffered from mental illnesses and his mother suffered from frequent aural and/ or visual hallucinations.
While in the Saint Johns orphanage in Washington he and other boys were stripped naked and were beaten and whipped by the teachers. He eventually came to enjoy the physical pain of the beatings and was reported to get erections while be being beaten, making him an easy target for getting teased by the other boys.
In 1880 his mother was able to hold down a steady job and take care of him. In 1882 at the age of 12, he began a relationship with the telegraph boy who introduced Fish to such practices as drinking urine and eating feces. Fish started visiting the public bathrooms to watch other boys undress and would spent a great deal of his weekends there. After that he was also a profilgate and compulsive writer of obscene letters to women.
In 1890 Fish moved to New York City, and was reportedly a male prostitute until his mother arranged a marriage for him in 1898, which he went through with. His wife was 9 years younger than he was. He was said to still be raping young boys throughout his marriage. He and his wife had 6 children together: Albert, Anna, Gertrude, Eugene, John, and Henry Fish.
Fish had recounted an incident where a male love took to him a wax musuem and he became fascinated with a bisection of a penis, and soon after took a morbid interest in castration. During a relationship that he had had with a mentally retarded man, Fish reportedly tried to castrate him, but the mans screams frightened him and he left the man a $10 bill and fled. In 1903 Fish was arrested for embezzlement and was sentenced to his first incarceration at Sing Sing.
In 1910 Fish committed his first attack on a child, Thomas Bedden in Wilmington, Delaware. Later he had stabbed a mentally retarded boy in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Usually his victims were either mentally retarded or African Americans because Fish believed they would not be missed. At the age of 55 Fish started experiencing delusions and hallucinations that God wanted him to torture and castrate little boys. Doctors believed that Fish suffered from religious pyschosis.
In 1917 Fish's wife left him for the handyman who lived them, leaving him to care for their 6 children alone. The rejection Fish felt caused him to start hearing voices and doing strange things such as wrapping himself up in a carpet and saying he was following the instructions of John the Apostle. It was after that that Fish starting indulging in self harm. He would imbed needles in his own groin and perineum. Normally he'd take them out when he was done, but eventually he would start to embed them so deeply that they were impossible to take out. An X-ray revealed that Fish had at least 29 needles stuck in his pelvis, and he was also said to have himself repeatedly with a nail studded paddle. (Twisted much???)
In 1928 Fish had answered an ad in paper of an 18 year old boy looking for work. He went to the Budd residence to speak with Edward Budd with the intention of hiring him, thats where he first saw little Grace Budd. Fish told the Budds that his name was Frank Howard, a farmer from Farmingdale NY. Fish promised to hire Budd and said he would send for a him a few days later. He failed to do so and sent a telegraph explaining he would be visiting in a few days. He showed up a few days later claiming he had to go to his sisters birthday party, and covinced Delia Flannigan and Albert Budd to let Edwards youngest sister Grace, attend the party also. Grace Budd left with Fish that day and was never seen again.
Fish remarried on February 6, 1930 in Waterloo, New York to Estella Wilcox but got a divorce after only one week. Shortly after, Fish was arrested for sending an obscene letter to a woman who answered his ad for a maid. He was sent to the Bellvue psychiatric hospital for observation in 1930 and 1931 after his arrests.
In November of 1933 an anonymous letter was sent to Graces parents which detailed everything that happened to her before and after she died. The letter would later be traced back to Fish. Fish went into a detailed description of how he killed Grace, by choking her and stripping her naked and cutting her into small pieces so he could cook her and eat her. He also said how sweet and tender her ass was while he ate her, and how it took him 9 days to eat her entire body. He also mentioned that she died a virgin. (go here to read the entire messed up letter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Fish)
The letter was delivered in an envelope with a hexagonal emblem with the letters "N.Y.P.C.B.A." on it that stood for New York Private Chauffeur's Benevolent Association". A janitor at that company said he had taken some of the stationary but left it at his rooming house and moved out and never used it. Fish was the next to live in rooming house that janitor moved out of. William F. King, lead investigator of the Grace Budd murder, was waiting outside of Fish's door when he returned home and asked him to go to headquarters for questioning. Fish agreed to be questioned but then brought out a razor blade, after being disarmed, Fish was taken to be questioned and admitted to the murder of Grace Budd. He said he meant to go to the house to kill Edward Budd, Graces brother. Fish had said it never entered his mind to rape the girl but he admitted to having two involuntary ejaculations, which was used at the trial to make it look like the kidnapping was sexually motivated and to avoid the mention of cannibalism.
Police also discovered Fish was responsible for the disappearance and murder of 4 year old Billy Gaffney, who was kidnapped while playing with a friend outside. Gaffney's mother went to Sing Sing to see Fish to get the details of her sons death. Fish confessed to murdering him. He dessribed beating the boys ass until he bled and also how he cut the boys ears and nose off, and slit his mouth open from ear to ear. He then went on to describe how he stuck a knife in he little boys belly and drank his blood. He told the boys mother how he cut Billy up and only kept the meat that he would later cook and eat. He told her how he prepared and cooked her son, and he went on to tell her that his "monkey" was sweet but his "pee wees" were tough so he threw them in toilet. (What a sick sick man! Yeesh!)
The trial for Albert Fish for the murder of Grace Budd started on March 11, 1935 and lasted 10 days. Fish pleaded insanity, saying that he heard voices from God, telling him to kill children. Several psychiarists testified about Fish's sexual fetishes which included sadism, coprophilia, urophilia, pedophilia, infibulation, and masochism. They also said that Fish was a "pyschiatric phenomenon" and that there were no other records of any one person possessing so many sexual abnormalities. All of the pyschiatrists agreed that Fish was insane. He was cross examined on whether or not he knew right from wrong. It was found that while Fish did know right from wrong, that it was perveted knowledge because it was based on his views of sin, atonement and religion. One of Fish's stepdaughters testified against him claiming that he had taught her and her brothers and sisters a "game" that included overtones of child molestion and masochism.
After the trail ended, Fish was found guilty and was ordered the death sentence. After his sentencing Fish confessed to the murder of 8 year old Fransis X. McDonnell. The boy was assaulted and then strangled with his own suspenders. He arrived at Sing Sing in March of 1935. Before his execution, Fish was said to have helped the executioner place the electrodes on his body. He was also recorded to have said that the execution would be "the supreme thrill of my life". He was executed on January 16, 1936. He entered the chamber at 11:06 and was dead three minutes later.
So thats that for Albert Fish. What a creeper! I was really disturbed and grossed out when I read about him!! Yikes! To steal a line from Zane, it gave me the wiggins just writing about him. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the twisted info I've just bestowed upon you! Don't forget to read up on Zombie Zanes articles, as usual, you'll be glad you did!
